FAQs

Thread Shed accepts a changing list of donations, including sewing machines, fabric and haberdashery items, depending on the season and what we have planned.
However, as we are a small team with limited space, it's easy to get overwhelmed. We appreciate you contacting us before donating, and please do not leave items outside the Church buildings.
If you have an unused sewing machine or overlocker that is in working condition and has recently been serviced, then we'd love to talk to you. Email us first as we prioritise some makes and models over others.

Metal recyclers will sometimes accept these.

We are all volunteers and we don't do repairs for people, but we're very happy to teach you how to do them yourself.
You can come to a class, a workshop or simply a stitch social, and we'll offer help and suggestions.
You can use our sewing machines for a small donation too.

Yes! Check our What's on page to see what classes and workshops are coming up.

A class is designed to teach you specific skills in sewing. Our beginner's classes, for example, assume no prior knowledge and teach you everything you need to know to make something as a first step, like a pillowcase.
A workshop is project based, so it assumes you know the basics (ie, you can thread a sewing machine, sew simple items, finish seams, cut out a pattern etc) and walks you through the making of a specific project, like a dress, a bag or making patchwork.
If you're a complete beginner, we suggest you try a few classes to get your skills up, then you can choose projects that you're interested in that can challenge your skills without being too hard.

You're welcome to attend our stitch socials, which are friendly gatherings where people come together and hand sew/knit/crochet their own project while chatting together. We don't use sewing machines for these, so bring along something you can craft with your hands. It doesn't matter what the project is, whether it's embroidery, sewing or something with yarn. We ask for a small donation to attend, and tea and coffee are provided.
